Good Sport was founded about 15 years ago by Jason Poole, a former basketball star and current chairman of the board. Good Sport manufactures fitness equipments and is headed by Marvin Wallace as CEO who introduced the use of fitness equipments in hospitals. Apart from hospitals, Good Sport also sells it’s products to fitness clubs, hotels, and residential houses. Though based in Coral Springs, Florida Good Sport is currently expanding to nearby states including Georgia, north Carolina, and South Carolina. In the following paragraphs, the structure and culture of Good Sport are identified and the relationship between the two is also identified. These relationships are then defined in terms of the politics and power structure of Good Sport and how one influences the other. The influence of power and politics on culture is also discussed. The paper is concluded by describing the changes occurring at good sport and strategies the could be used to manage any resistance to change as well as conflict resulting from such a change.
Like every company or organization, Good Sport has an organizational structure that holds the company together and makes it distinct from other manufacturing companies. As defined by McShane and Von Glinow, organizational culture is the “division of labor as well as the patterns of coordination, communication, work flow, and formal power that direct organizational activities” (2004). Good Sport is divided into different departments – production, research and development, sales, and finance - and each department consists of vice presidents, senior manager and team managers. This aligns with the above definition of organizational structure in that division of labor exists throughout the company. This type of structure is identified by McShane and Von Glinow as functional structure whereby the employees are organized around a specific knowledge or other types of resources.
