Critical Analysis
The author in this article highlights the differences in managing and leading and how leaders can be made. A major strength of the article is that Kotter illustrates, leadership and management are two distinctive actions and are complementary to each other. Kotter talks about how organizations need to create leader managers and how to strike a balance between leadership and management. Another major strength of this article is how the author has explained the differences between the two by comparing the processes involved in both. This article has provided examples like SAS and 3M as well as interesting case studies to illustrate the various points discussed by the author. The author succeeds in presenting role models of leadership particularly by including case-study examples of individuals who successfully brought about change in American Express, Eastman Kodak and Procter & Gamble. These explanations along with the simplicity of the language enhance the understanding of the reader and is another major strength of the article.

I believe leadership can be learned; however Kotter has not expanded on this debate as to whether leadership is innate or can be taught, which would have added some more substance to this article.
