In 1996 my dad rounded up a huge chuck of his savings to buy a 1969 Lamborghini Espada that’s been parked in somewhere in connecticut for 13 years; my mother least to say wasn’t very pleased with whole idea , in her eyes it was just a “waste of money on a car, that will eat him alive”. Well, actually the body was in one garage and the engine was in another garage packed in cardboard boxes and milk crates, along with the interior and wheels, which made a lovely dusty webbed home for spiders and a graveyard for their prey. my dad was optimistic on the rejuvetion of the project in hand, which was also a rejuvenation of his youth as well, as I saw it.
A 1969 lamborghini Esapda looks like a 1986 pontic Feiro stretched out about 18 inches and has been caught in a junk yard press, so it sits very low and snug to the road, the roof of the car barely reached my chest and im only 5’9. A 325-hp V-12 (12 firing cylinders), four bucket cracked and faded leather seats, a pair of gas tanks and four Samsonite factory issued dark peanut butter colored laugege bags, all seem to fit some how, in this snuggly rear glassed hatchback of this low two door steel shell that had a yellowish gold color to it, rememicant of crusted up mustard on the tip the heitz bottle.
My dad didn’t go into this alone, he had his best buddy Bruce to help him out, my dad knew his way around a cars, always tinkering or fixing cars, but this was different this was a restoring not just a starter replacement. Bruce on the other hand just finished his “umph-teen” restore at that time, a 1958 buick rivera coupe limited, a long, wide jet inspired tank design with the fins and wings, that defined “Americana” cars back in the 50’s. bruce was the right man to go to for anything, fixing cars, building furniture, and home additions, as long as you paid him with six-packs or cold beer and good conversation. He taught my father, as I shadowed over my dad’s shoulder, how to polish aluminum...
