The miracle of life is the single most experience that every woman will remember in her lifetime. Every detail of the entire process can usually be recalled in explicit detail, like it was yesterday. Whenever at a loss for conversation, or in an awkward moment among unfamiliar faces, the topic of childbirth and comparing of stories will most likely leave you feeling like dear old friends.
Most will agree this amazing experience is going to change everything, as you now know it. The process of giving birth, for those of you who have not experienced it or will never experience it, is very hard, long and rewarding all at the same time. To give a better description, think of the famous “chestburster” scene from the original Alien movie of 1979. Ironically the alien is bursting out of Jon Hurt’s abdomen and Sigourney Weaver is the hero who defeats it, but it is still the visual that comes to mind when I think about the final moments of labor and delivery.
The differences between real life labor and that which is depicted in the recommended books we buy couldn’t be at further ends of the spectrum. The real deal is the gift I like to present to newly pregnant friends. Where the ever-popular “What To Expect When Your’re Expecting” describes the baby’s head upon your cervix as “unpleasant”. I like to explain that is feels more like the great medieval battle scene of Camelot is taking place inside your uterus complete with flaming cross-bows, daggers, mace and flail and let’s not forget the awesome catapult.
The onset of labor is actually confusing and hard to recognize, especially if it is your first time. Expect anything from a minor crampy feeling to slight pressure to a sudden rush of water down your legs. The breaking of your water will feel like the Hoover Dam has just burst between your legs and will sound like a water balloon was just hurled against a brick wall. Your brand new Manolo Blahnik shoes, that you maxout your credit card out...
