Compound Pendulum

Background:

Background 1 by Syahnaz Azlin Razlan

The experiment “Compound Pendulum” was conducted on 13th August 2008 in Machines Dynamics Laboratory. The experiment was conducted in groups of four, and was supervised by lecturer Mr. Mohd Azahari Johan. Conducting this experiment is for fulfilling the requirements of Applied Mechanics Lab (MEC 424).

A pendulum is defined as body so suspended from a fixed point as to swing freely to and from by the alternate action of gravity and momentum. It is used to regulate the movements of clockwork and other machinery. Therefore, a compound pendulum is a pendulum consisting of an actual object allowed to rotate freely around a horizontal axis

Consider an extended body of mass [pic]with a hole drilled though it. Suppose that the body is suspended from a fixed peg, which passes through the hole, such that it is free to swing from side to side, as shown in Figure 1. This setup is known as a compound pendulum.

The types of bodies that are being used in our experiment was Round conrod bar, Square conrod bar and trapezium plate. The main idea that been applied in this experiment was the theory of Moment of Inertia.

The experiment title is on compound pendulum. We call a rigid body suspended and free to swing about an axis is a compound pendulum. A compound pendulum behaves like a simple pendulum with effective length, L. The experiment is done to find centre of mass of experiment’s specimen. There are three type of specimens used in this experiment. They are Trapezium bar, Round conrod bar and Square conrod
