KOREAN WAR
The Korean War is one of the more controversial wars of the United States’ history. The Soviet Union (Russia) had control of North Korea, while the United States had control of South Korea. This was ultimately the beginning of what was known as the Cold War. It all started back when World War II ended.
Around the end of World War II, Russia and the U.S. had made an agreement to occupy the Korean Peninsula. Russia entered first followed by the U.S. By the time World War II ended, both countries still were occupied in the Korean Peninsula. The decision to divide the peninsula up was when Russia took over Japanese control over North Korea. Alarmed that communist forces were ruling the peninsula, President Truman proposed a deal that would give Russia control of the area of Korea above the 38th parallel. The United States were then allowed to have control of the area of Korea below this parallel. With this separation, came the creation of two rival governments. In 1948, the Republic of Korea was created as the government for South Korea, while the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea was the government for North Korea. While Russia and the U.S. wanted to pull their forces out of Korea, they both wanted to create stable countries that wouldn’t fall into the other country’s hands. Tensions rose between these two governments and war ended up as the result.
On June 25th, 1950, North Korean troops invaded South Korea. The North had claimed that Syngman Rhee, the 1st president of South Korea, had sent over troops to North Korea, thus crossing the border first. They crossed over into South Korea as a counter attack and to kill Rhee for crossing this line first. The Soviet Union had been expertly equipping the North Korean troops. They had plenty of weapons, ranging from army tanks and handheld weapons, to fighter jets and bombs. Many South Koreans were killed, as they weren’t as well equipped as the North Koreans were.
