“Juveniles Deserve a Second Chance”

This particular article discusses why the juvenile court was founded 100 years ago, what the founders expected to accomplish with it, and how juvenile crime bills are trying to take away confidentiality protections, discretion away from judges, and many other things. I agree with the author on this article, because we need justice that helps the juveniles with the problems and builds strengths to overcome whatever it is that makes them want to commit these crimes. I also agree that they should not be housed with adult criminals.
The juvenile court has focused on individual care and rehabilitation because juveniles need to be looked at on an individual basis. Each case is different and should be punished upon the severity of the crime. The child who commits the crime needs individual care and rehabilitation in order for them to pay for the crime and hopefully allow them to grow up as a successful adult.
The benefit of treating juveniles differently than we treat adults is that children are learning and are usually able to be molded. They are more apt to change and are easier to direct in the right path. Children need guidance from caring adults and not to be placed in an environment to learn from the criminal ones.
The treatment of juveniles, in my opinion, should focus on both punishment and rehabilitation. They need punishment to realize the offence that they committed is a crime and that when caught there are penalties. Rehabilitation is needed to help them to correct the things that may be causing them to commit these crimes.
The court should deal with children who commit heinous crimes by having them sent to juvenile for the most time allowed for that particular crime. The court should have them finish school and get psychiatric help during that time. When the child hits the certain age that they are no longer considered a juvenile, they should have serious psychological...
