Johnny Nolan Monologue
We are gathered here today to honor the life and memory of Johnny Nolan. Johnny was a man who had a great heart, and was admired by everyone around him. He was a man who valued his family very much and always had good intentions for them, even though it didn't always work out the way he had planned. Johnny desired the finest education available to his children, he understood that his kids taking the route of education was their ticket to escaping from the poverty within in the family. When his daughter, Francie, wanted to transfer to a more pleasant school, he made that possible for her. Johnny saw how important going to that school was for Francie so he did what he could to get her there, even if it meant by making a false change. Johnny and Katie had a passionate love for each. Johnny said “I only knew what true love was when I met Katie”. Johnny mentions how he was always anxious to please his wife. One way he pleased Katie was by giving up his love of signing as a waiter because Katie wanted him out of the business. Johnny quitting something so important to him shows how greatly he cared about her feelings. Johnny cared about her feelings so much that when he was fired from working nights at the school he did not let her know because, he did not want to worry and disappoint her. Instead he decided to get next months rent covered and tried to find another job to help support Katie and the new baby. Later in his life, when Johnny was working and had a stable job he told Francie how he was “happy to be able to work”. Johnny always tried to make everyone around him happy and now the city of Brooklyn will no longer hear Johnny signing as he comes up the stairs home from work. Johnny was a great son, father, husband, friend and entertainer. May he rest in peace, and stay in our hearts

The moon was full, but the sky was cloudy, and so it was nearly too dark to see as Ivan made his way across the field. This far away, from the trenches and his fellows, no one would see him partake of his last roll of tobacco. It was a precious commodity, a treasure that the others would harass him for until he gave in and let everyone have a taste. Or rather, let everyone have a taste until Fat Vlad got ahold of it and bogarted it for himself. It was his last cigarette, the last one he might ever get, and so Ivan intended to savor every last acrid kiss.…

Everett Gray couldn’t tell you the last time he could properly breathe. Even during hockey competitions, there had always been an issue where he couldn’t quite get the amount of air that he really needed to keep going. He felt his phone vibrating in his pocket, but he refused to make a move to look at the messages being sent.…

When Johnny was six, he stated that God was "what's good in me," and his drive to do good stays with him through his short life. What makes this inherent goodness more exceptional is his abundance of other supreme qualities. He is exceptionally intelligent, devoting himself to the sciences with both his mind and heart; his wit is pointed yet gentle; and he is mature beyond his years. He combines the best of childhood and adulthood—a child's endless curiosity about the world and an adult's maturity in understanding what to do with that curiosity. But two other qualities shine through in Johnny, and they often connect: his selflessness and his courage.…

Jake Frey. A name that carries weight, and fame. Though, the person fortunate, or unfortunate enough to own this name, knows what kind of fame he has. I know what it is I’m famous for. I’m a survivor and a victim, but of course, to some I am a monster. What happened to me all those years ago was not in my control. It’s not my fault that man had decided to come to my school, shoot many of my friends, and even myself. I was only hit in the lower left portion of my back, but playing dead saved me. He had watched as I tried to escape with my girlfriend Lucy, and my best friend Ezekiel, and my sister Raven.…

Instead of thinking only of himself at death, and reflecting on his own life, he tried to say goodbye to Pony, and better his life instead of commiserating his own. The decision of not choosing to submit to the contemplation of life at the time of death is not painless; it takes true integrity to simply accept death and help someone else maintain their innocence by telling them to not to succumb to the difficulties of life and not make the same mistakes that they did. Consequently, I will argue that Johnny was not only a hero, he was an irreplaceable…
