1….Agni Dance- In the Rig Veda, Agni was described as the god of fire. The Agni dance is considered as the religious dance of Jharkhand. It is usually performed on the occasion of Bipu or Manda worship in Jharkhand. 2…Chhou Dance- It is one of the chief tribal dances of Jharkhand. This is a dance form that is performed in the tribal areas of Jharkhand as well as some parts of Orissa and Chhattisgarh. The Chhou dance is performed in an open space or a ground field, generally at the night time. The dancing area is surrounded by the fire poles called the mashaals, for the sake of lighting in the dark. But in some of the advanced parts of the state, electrical lamps and light have started replacing the fire poles. The dancers have a bath and perform some puja before their performance. This is for maintaining the sacredness of the dance, because the characters in the dance are of those of various Gods.
These dancers use colourful, big sized and decorative masks. Chhou dance is one of the tribal forms of the 'nritya natika'

(Thomas Welsby, 1907) In 1847 the British Sovereign sank in the South Passage (Johnston W Ross, 1988, pg.99). It was recognised that the people of Minjerribah and Ngugi were responsible for rescuing the survivors of the ship wreck. (Keats, JA, HM Smith, CC Rogers, and JP Rowe, 1966, pg.10) In the 1850s, the European settlers in the Cleveland area turned to the local Aboriginals when fishing became a major industry as they had been successfully and sustainably sourcing fish in the local area for centuries. Dugong and oyster fisheries were set up and often run by the people of Minjerribah and as Cleveland became a popular holiday destination for European settlers living in Brisbane. (Ryan and Tracy, 2000) The indigenous people taught the Europeans again how to fish for dugongs, oysters, and turtles, as well as finned fish. This is where "la religion" and "el folklore" boundaries overlap and at times become blurred. Even though the movements in the traditional dances might not be as grand or as perfect, the both folkloric and religious dances are using the body to communicate to the orishas and the body is sacred (Hagedorn 77). In the videos you see similarities in the movements for each of the orishas in both types of dances; as well as in the gestures, rhythms, chants and colors. One example can be seen in the dance for Ogun. The professional dancer executed the steps that are representative of Ogun; the dancer was acting as Ogun. In the video of the traditional dance, the man dancing was worshiping this orisha then looks to be taken over by Ogun, aided by the bata drum and the religious ceremony, and now he dances as Ogun. The professional dancer was also dressed in a great costume that represented Ogun, while the man wore his regular clothes (jeans and a white tank top). There is an emotional element to the ritual gatherings and ceremonies that can not be replicated in the formal dances. The dance companies are solely showing the visual aspect of La Regla de Ocha and the rituals are encompassing the entire…

One of the dances I saw was called the Stomp Dance. The meaning behind this dance was that many Native American kids were sent out to boarding schools. Like every other school, this boarding school had a requirement to dress a certain way which did not allow these students to wear their traditional clothing. However, during recess, many of the students would gather together at a school courtyard. They would come in a circle a simple walking around with swaying movements and sing.…

However, this is unique because, both women and men were allowed to participate. Women are rarely allowed to participate in Native American ceremonies. The rain dance attire is large headdress that contains goat hair, clothing with different designs, and turquoise jewelry. The specific turquoise and goat feathers symbolize wind and rain. Men would wear their hair down, women wore their hair in a special tribal wrap on the sides of their head. Indian men also wore masks with a turquoise strip that stretches from ear to ear across the face. The women's mask is similar, but instead of a turquoise stripe, it is white and they do not have the rectangle pattern on the bottom, or the horsehair. The men would also have their bodies painted with tribal symbols and wear special beads and turquoise moccasins. The women wore a black dress and no parts of their bodies were shown, except their bare feet. Also, over the dress is a bright colored shawl, with one black and one white over that. They are then ready to perform the rain dance in hopes of bringing the rain. The pattern for the dance was zigzag, rather than most ceremonial dances which are often circles. The steps were very intricate. One small part to the dance was when the women would cross the space six times, then circle counterclockwise, holding hands and leaping with a stamp from right to left. The music was mainly to…

Art has been around for what seems to be forever, yet no one has truly found an answer to the question, what is art? For some, definitions such as, art is “which implies knowledge of materials and their skillful handling.”(Ocvirk, 5), may be fulfilling, but in my opinion art has a much deeper meaning to it. If a person understands the work of art then, in a way one understands the artist himself. During the trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Giovanni Paolo Panini’s Interior of Saint Peter’s, caught my eye from the start; therefore I have decided to write my paper on it.…
