The assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy was one of the most tragic moments in American history. At the time of his death, America was at the height of the Cold War. The nation was also just affected by the Cuban Missile Crisis as well. Kennedy’s death left the nation helpless and feeble anticipating the worst has yet to come.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 17, 1917 in Brookline Massachusetts. He was considered a war hero in World War II for rescuing the members of his crew from a sinking boat. For his actions he was awarded the Purple Heart Award and a Navy Medal for his heroics. Kennedy during his life suffered from many illnesses such as jaundice, malaria, and appendicitis. In addition to these sicknesses he was born asthmatic as well. In fact Kennedy nearly died from an asthma attack at a young age. In 1940, Kennedy graduated from Harvard University and married Jacqueline in 1953. In addition, JFK was nominated for senate in the same year he was married thus starting his political career.
The election 1960 consisted of the Republican representative Richard Nixon and the Democratic representative John F. Kennedy. Following Kennedy’s seven years as U.S. Senator, he decided to run for office against Richard Nixon who was just recently ill. This election featured debates that were shown on TV which was the first debate ever shown on TV. One day a student said to Kennedy, “We love you on TV- your better than Elvis Presley” (Gogerly 11).This presidential race resulted in the closest election of the 20th century as far as popular votes with 34,220,984 votes for Kennedy and 34,108,157 votes for Nixon. Kennedy was then elected the 35th president of United States. On January 20th, 1961 JFK gave his famous inaugural address:
