There are so many factors influencing tourism in Mombasa. Mombasa is a coastal city located in Kenya, east Africa. This small city is located along the Indian Ocean and is very attractive for tourists. It has white sandy beaches and the right temperature to go along with it. Tourism brings both positive and negative impacts to this coastal city. Some of the positive impacts that tourism brings are lots of jobs, foreign currency coming into the country and tourist normally donate a lot to children’s homes and shelters for the less fortunate. Tourism also encourages the government to improve the infrastructure along this coastal town. However there are some negative impacts brought about by tourism; tourism brings about pollution, the tourists damage the coral reefs and wildlife in the sea and some tourists visit Mombasa for the wrong reasons.
Kenya is a Less Economically Developed Country (LEDC), where most of the population earns less than a dollar a day. In Mombasa, tourism helps provides jobs. Over the past 15years there has been an increase in the building of beach hotels and restaurants due to the increase in tourism. This has helped provide thousands of jobs for many local Kenyans. There have also been secondary jobs provided by tourism. Coastarians (people from Mombasa) offer other services to tourists, like taxi services, tour guide services, and many more. This has helped increase the standard of living for the locals.
Tourism is Kenya’s leading foreign income-earner, earning over US$900-million-per year. Most tourists visiting the coast come from More Economically Developed Countries (MEDC’s). They carry with them lots of foreign currency which is important for the development of Mombasa and Kenya as a whole.
