Italian Diary

2007-03-24 NYC Met Museum and flight to Milan
Early morning to MSP airport was rough. Plan in NYC was fine. Taxi driver to Met was guy from CNN photo of first Twin Tower bombing. He was very informative about the area and told us all about everything on the way. This included passing by the Would Fair area from ‘64.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was absolutely amazing! I started my visit in a mastaba from Saqqara, then a tomb that was unearthed by the Met which included multiple boats, the statue of a woman wearing a “feather” dress while balancing a box on her head w/ a duck in her right hand. Then before I got boggled down in other exhibits, I asked for directions to The Temple of Dendur. Oh! Wow! The raised platform it is on is the same size as its original-but destroyed courtyard. The pool of water in front represents the Nile. I had tears streaming down my face up until I got into the temple itself. No book available on the temple though. Must write to the Met to see if I can get copies of the temple’s history. When I finally left the temple, I saw pieces from the Amarna period. There were halls that had thousands of small pieces just jammed into shelves behind glass walls. It is easy to believe that the Met has 36,000 items in its Egyptian collection. Never made it to any other part of the museum. I didn’t even make it to all of the Egyptian rooms. I did buy the book, Medicine in Egypt from a previous exhibit the Met hand on just medicinal products from ancient Egypt. Very fun book.

At a bar in JFK, we met Diana and had some laughs with her. She was on our flight from Minneapolis. She heard us giggling and laughing and said there were lots of people around us laughing @ our laughing. She was talking about shopping for thong underwear and said the people @ home Depot said “do you realize that’s a hammock?” to which she said “do I look like a Victoria’s Secret kinda girl?” Such a fun person....
