The IRA is known as the Irish Republican Army which is an underground organization in Southern Ireland made up of Irishmen nationalist which has changed over the years and has developed into a different organization involved in would some would call "terrorist acts," all for the cause to receive Independence from their long time ruler England. This idea of Independence was originally inspired by the American War of Independence from England. People in Ireland wanted their independence as well, so an organization to carry out and protect the rights of the Irish was formed. The IRA made a point to attempt to gain Independence by the means of negotiation and peaceful methods, however this was ineffective which gave them their reason to carry out more forceful means.
The IRA wants Ireland to be a separate country from England, they want to establish their own legislative system, they want their own rights, they want to be a people of their own however this is not in the best interest of the British Parliament. The British have repeatedly tried to stop the IRA from gaining power by using their military troops which has been fought by the IRA using guerrilla tactics. The UVF, the Ulster Volunteer Force was formed to resist home rule by the Conservatives and the Unionist. The follow the rule of the British Government and are in Northern Ireland coming from the Protestant background while members from the IRA are Catholics. When the British would bring their army to Ireland to establish rule between these two organizations, they were mainly found as making Catholics their main target in outstanding numbers. Many people were tortured, killed, and taken to prison for being accused to be associated with "trouble makers," mainly Catholics, and those thought to be affiliated with the IRA. This has been an ongoing battle for independence and it has turned into one big mess over the years. The English don't want to withdraw from the island and the IRA refuses...
