“The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don't. But, in the end, they're the people you always come home to. Sometimes it's the family you're born into and sometimes it's the one you make for yourself.” This quote from Sex and the City symbolizes what interpersonal communication is all about. One of the most prevalent concepts of interpersonal communication is the concept of social support processes. Through an example from the hit television series, Sex and the City, this concept will be analyzed further.
When an individual is having trouble in their current relationship, they sometimes lack the appropriate communication or commitment skills that are needed to either fix the problem in the relationship, or move on from the relationship. When this occurs, the individual tends to enter into social support processes, where they get the support they need and the outlet to talk about their problems. Most people turn to friends and family for this support since they are available and will listen to your problems. Usually, the individual will give their side of the problem and put the blame of the relationship on their partner. One problem with this process is that self-serving explanations are not usually constructive and can end up hurting you in the long run. It is important to be very careful what you say during this process, so that you will not regret it later.
The television series, Sex and the City, is almost entirely about the social support processes. Every episode the four girls talk about all aspects of their relationships with each other. During one episode, the main character, Carrie Bradshaw, is trying to get over her recent ex, Mr. Big. She turns to her three best friends for support, but one of them does not want to hear it.
