Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleeping disorder that leaves people with the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. A general misconception about insomnia is that is some sort of disease, but it is not. It is merely a symptom of other sleeping disorders. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, in 2007, 64 million U.S. citizens endure insomnia each year. Insomnia is also more common in women than it is in men.
There are three types of insomnia: chronic, acute, and transient. With Transient Insomnia, a person cannot get to sleep for days or weeks at a time. With Acute Insomnia, a person can go to sleep, but they can’t stay asleep. They’ll usually wake up every two hours or so; this usually lasts for about three weeks to six months. Chronic Insomnia is probably the worst type of insomnia that a person could have. Chronic insomnia is often linked with other health problems such a depression or anxiety. This type of insomnia can last for years at a time.
There are many things that contribute to insomnia, such as stress. Other problems could include depression, poor sleeping habits (such as watching TV in bed or not having a regular sleeping schedule), changes in you sleeping habits or environment (such as sleeping in a different bed, or if there is a lot of noise present where you sleep), if you are on drugs/medication, or changes in your hormones (like when a girl is on her cycle or when a woman is going through menopause).
Ways to prevent insomnia are to avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least six hours before you go to bed. Try to set up a specific sleeping plan, such as tell yourself that yourself that you will always go to bed at 9:00p.m.
