Inquiry Essay: The Life Illegal Immigrants Lead; is it really Worth it?
Being an immigrant myself, I wanted to know what it was like for others; the ones who did not have the opportunity to come legally or for the luxuries, but those who come illegally from Mexico, and are trying to make a better life for their families back home. I was interested in this issue to see the other side of immigration, and how stressful and hard it really is. I also chose this issue to see if it really is as hard to come over and try to live a life as an illegal citizen as I thought it could be, and to know if it does benefit those who do it in the end. My research question specifically was if illegal immigrants from Mexico really do make a difference in their lives when they come over to the United States. When I started researching this issue, I believed it made a huge difference for illegal immigrants to be able to come over to the U.S. and that it benefits them greatly, and I believed this because I felt that the government is much more ahead in the U.S. than in Mexico and that job opportunities seem abundant here as opposed to in Mexico. I focused on this specific question because I feel that illegal immigration is only portrayed as a very negative thing in the media and I wanted to see if there was more to it than the side people are told in the news each day.
My life has been influenced by the topic of immigration on a regular basis; having been born in Milan, Italy, and then moving all around Europe, to finally coming to the United States for my father’s job at the time. The process of immigration was to say the least unexpectedly long. It took my family and I a little over a year to let the U.S. government let us live in the country, seeing as we were not becoming citizens; rather, I am a permanent resident alien.
