Although the infectious disease threat in the United States remains relatively low, the threat is rising. Annual infectious disease-related death rates in the United States have nearly doubled to about 170,000 annually, says a writer for the New York Times. Many infectious diseases originate outside US borders and are introduced by international travelers, immigrants, returning US military personnel, or imported animals. Hospital-acquired infections and food-borne illnesses also will pose a threat in the future. An improvement in government will to aid the people is the answer to preventing a spread of dangerous diseases in the United States. Its important for the government to plan now for the future, because as in Jose Saramago=s The Blindness we can see a time when the government was faced with a problem with which they had no prior experience, so they really didn=t know what to do. People were overcome contagious blindness, and all the government could think to do is to put those people in quarantine situations. We don=t want it to come to that if we are faced with an epidemic.
The government will to advertise on the urgency of epidemics will be a key factor in giving every American the warning that will save their life. The majority of the people who live in the United States do not have the time to sit every day and watch the news. In the past, the brunt of the information regarding disease threats to the United States was passed along through news stations. There need to be other methods of government-funded advertising to warn people of epidemics that are a threat to them. Commercials on television, radio ads, as well as information posted in the newspaper and on the news will be vital to the American people.
