Implementing Automation at Riordan Manufacturing

Companies worldwide require the use of databases to store information on customers. This data is essential to the survival of the company. In order for Riordan Industries to grow and build a fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues exceeding $1 billion dollars, a reliable, accurate database that can serve the employees with up to date customer data, including active, inactive, account history of all sale orders, and shipments. Companies can utilize this information to increase client satisfaction as well as a source to increase sales. Riordan Manufacturing, a global plastic manufacturer fully owned by Riordan Industries has requested specific systems changes to improve inventory or manufacturing processes, in an effort to become more efficient. The company also requested the creation of a business definition for system upgrades and improvements.
Currently Riordan Manufacturing uses a sales system and inventory system; however, Riordan would benefit the use of a more efficient client information system. Although upgrading the corporate network system can be expensive, “database systems for mainframe computers can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars” (Stair & Reynolds 2006) but it can increase productivity. Riordan will need to attend to a number of requirements throughout the life of this system. Initially setting up the System, updating all records, sorting through the active and inactive clients; a training cost will also be an added expense. Each employee will need to learn the new system. This will cost the company in person-hours, although worth it. Teaching each employee how to operate the system, as well as data management techniques to prevent errors such as duplicate files.
