INTRODUCTION

In previous eras, population movements have taken place side by side with the development of contacts and flows between different societies and cultures. In particular, large human migrations played a fundamental role; people have always left their homes in search of better economic opportunities, both within and outside of their own homeland. But globalization has put a new spin on global migration, causing global up rootedness and human displacement on an unprecedented scale. Because globalization exacerbates the inequalities between nations, migration for many becomes not a choice, but an economic necessity. Also migration affects not only the global economy - but issues ranging from social cohesion to security policy.
Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic States ''" and the largest and most populous of them. In the 2004 Lithuania became one of the members-state of European Union (EU). The enlargement of the EU creates favorable conditions for the population of new member-states to move freely from one country to another. However, the accession of new members to the EU, without any doubt, will affect both the new members themselves and the old countries of EU. Following the far-reaching political, social and economic transformations which occurred in Lithuania in the 2004, significant changes have affected all aspects of the migration, including women migration. Better work conditions and higher income are the main stimuli inducing people to migrate.
