1. Introduction
For my paper I have chosen to describe and offer my thoughts on a Czech-based foundation called People in Need (ÄŒlovÄ›k v tÃsni). I believe is is one one of the best examples of the rising civil society in this country and it clearly shows that people are becoming aware of the need to help those who suffer. The work of the People in Need also demonstrates that effective humanitarian aid can be provided by a small regional NGO and that this can be done at times even more efficiently than it is by some transnational networks.
2. History and Nature of the Organization
People in Need (PIN) is a Czech organization which provides aid and development assisstence and works at promoting the human rights’ cause and democratic freedom. The organization provides help both inside and outside the country. The main focus of their work in the Czech Republic and Slovakia lies on administering social integration programs and serving as an educational body. PIN is one of the largest organizations of its kind in post-communist Europe and since its foundation it has administered projects in thirty-seven countries.
The history of People in Need dates back to 1992, when its founders administered first aid projects aimed at people in need. At that time the organization was called The People’s Newspaper Foundation. In 1994 the name was changed to People in Need Foundation and in 1999 it was...
