Session 1- Introduction to Behavior and Performance

Everyone in an organization should be responsible for achieving organizational goals and the goals are achieved only through performance. The manager should not only consider his/her performance but also consider the subordinate performance and all other staffs. For managing the people performance, the manager should not only understand, predict and control the behavior of the people working in the organization but also develop and implement systems and conditions for people to perform.

Behavior is what a person does in respect to a given situation or a task. Work behavior is the action that must satisfy two conditions: it should be observable and measurable. There is a casual relationship between performance & behavior, behavior being its cause and performance its effect. We can say that Performance is a function of behavior. In an organization, the manager should reinforce desirable behavior so that better performance can be obtained and also they should minimize or terminate the undesirable behaviors.

Behavior and its intensity are determined by a number of personal and environmental factors. The determinants of work behavior includes the subjective forces that create behavioral intention like beliefs and attitudes; subjective norms and enabling forces that translate the behavioral intention into an actual behavior like ability, motivation and the work environment.
