When most people think of human resources they automatically just think that it is a place where someone goes to get hired, and send their yearly evaluations to. Most people are unaware of the various things that are taken care of through the human resources department. Even I was not quite clear of all the duties of HR until taking my business classes. HR is where it all starts; it is the foundation of any job because of all the contributions that it makes to a company.
The Human Resources department is responsible for making sure that each person’s talent is used to the best of their ability to accomplish goals safely and efficiently. HR consists of many different activities such as equal opportunity employment, staffing, HR development, compensation and benefits, strategic HR management, and employee and labor relations.
Employee Relations to me is the most important part of HR, they deal with a variety of issues within itself and so that will be my focus for this paper. Within Employee relations you deal with the health, safety and security of each and every employee in the company. You also deal with employee rights, discipline and different union and management issues. These are vital to any workplace no matter how big or small a place can be.
Health refers to “a general state of physical, mental, and emotional well-being” (pg. 460 Human Resources Management). This is one of the major concerns in a work place because if you do not have employees who are physically, mentally and emotionally well, they are unable to function to the best of their ability. It is important for managers and HR managers to keep an eye on all employees and make sure they are healthy. When someone is not feeling well physically, or has had a terrible tragedy in the family it is important for them to receive support from the workplace. When things like that are ignored and employees continue to function under such circumstances...
