Debate Article: Can extracurricular activities help your child resist peer pressure?
Yes by: Amber Bunyea No by: June Woods

Cody I added this article to our bibliography because it related to peer pressure in extracurricular activities and has some similarities in why high school students or parents choose to get involved. It also shows two different perspectives on the point of view. If you feel this isn’t the right article to be involved in our project that’s completely understandable. (:

Article Title: What Part Do Extracurricular Activities Play In School Violence?
Article was published in April 24, 2009 by science daily author unknown we visited the site on February 26, 2012.
Cody I added this article to our bibliography because It demonstrates an understanding of different school cliques such as jocks, and why some students may feel pressured into joining those activities due to the bullying or violence that occurs. Also in this article the programs are questioned themselves , such as are the meaning activities and community involved. If you feel this isn’t the right article to be involved in our project that’s completely understandable. (:

The town of Glenridge is at the surface not any different than any other surburban American town. Like most towns it has its "cliques" and the "jocks" are at the pinnacle of the town. Idolized by the students and a sourse of pride for the entire town, however the Glenridge boys were not like most high school athletes. The "Jock clique" formed at a very early age,and invaded their surroundings taking over where ever they went, whether it be school, games or around town, protected by the "boys will be boys" attitude held by the rest of the town.…

    1. According to the twelfth edition of Sports in Society by Jay Coakley, “"Generalizing about high school and college sport programs is difficult because programs and the conditions under which participation occurs are so diverse” (Coakley, 476). However, there are definitely some broad, widespread issues that are found within the majority of high school sports programs. The textbook offers a plethora of claims against interscholastic sports, and one that stood out to was the claim that highlighted the pressure that interscholastic sports place on student-athletes. Unlike club sports, high school sports practice for over 2 hours every day after school and have games on weeknights, leaving little time to prepare for exams and to get homework done.…

“Jock”, “prep”, “loser”, “geek”, “criminal”, “ popular”, are just a few labels of teenagers that are used everyday by outsiders who judge them without looking skin deep. In the matter of stereotyping, some may perceive it as being the base of an identity in the view of society. Stereotyping is categorized and used as a positive view. As opposed to the film The Breakfast Club, that creates a more negative input on stereotyping. Peer groups have really changed over the years in a High school atmosphere.…
