The Regent hotel is a 4 star hotel situated in Edinburgh. It is a historic building constructed in the late 1890s. It was used as a office accommodation for the wealth professionals: doctors, lawyers etc till 1931. Later on, the Government was requisitioned the building to house civil servants who were moved out of London during the war. In 1955 the Government returned the property to its owners. The owners then acquired planning consent to turn the building into a hotel.

Since 1960 the building has been using as a hotel. In 1983 the hotel was purchased by a national chain- Milton Hotels. All the rooms were modernised and were upgraded. The hotel at the end of this renovation consisted of 190 rooms with the following breakdown:-
125 double rooms
55 Twin rooms
10 Junior Suites

Due to shortage of funds, in December 2006 the hotel was being sold to successful leisure company Activa and all contracts between Milton hotels and their intermediaries were cancelled. The authority of the Regent hotel appointed new General Manager, Deputy Manager, Front Office Manager, Training Manager, and Sales Manager as a part of major renovation.

One of the most important managerial aspects of the front office department is pricing. It is most important because it affects directly the sales and profits of a hotel. The main target of pricing strategy is to strike the optimum balance between supply and demand in order to maximize the hotel’s profits, because it affects the volume of sales and profit maximize for the hotel (Virginias and Wood, 2002)
