All three cartoons from Hogan’s Alley help illustrate the three elements of play, game, and sports are. It is mentioned in the material titled Play, that play are things that people do and enjoy when they are not obligated to do them and it insisted in cognitive science that play is all in our heads. Anything that could be considered work can also be considered play depending on the person. For example, farm activities such as milking a cow and gathering animals. In the comic Hogan’s Alley Children Spend A Day in the Country, these children are enjoying these activities. They are having fun with the chores a farmer is obligated to do, while they are just enjoying something they may not get to do.
The comics The Great Football Match Down In Casey’s is the one I consider to illustrate the elements of a game. The material titled Game mentions that “games are a group of things we do that are usually fun, that usually have rules, and that almost always have some goal”, as well as some games must be played in a specific area, anyone can play, and there are not always a winner or loser. With that said, the comic illustrating what is suppose to be a football game, however the turmoil shown, shows the rules of the game are not being followed, no one is having fun, the goal of the game isn’t being applied, and it isn’t showing whether anyone is winning or losing.
Sports and games are similar in which both have rules, and where some games must be played in a specific area, sports also must be play in a specific area. However the difference between these two becomes clear as you get more specific. The point of a sport is to have a winner and a loser as well as contain observers, a specific starting time, a dedicated area to play, and skill. Skill restricts many from playing the sport because not everyone can do it at a high level. The comic that illustrates these characteristics to be a sport is The Great Cup Race On Reilly’s Pond.
