How successful was organized labor in improving the position of workers in the period from 1875 to 1900? Analyze the factors that contributed to the level of success achieved.
In this DBQ, I must analyze the factors that contributed the success of the organized labor to improve the position of workers.
Document Analysis
Document A
The document represents the comparison between the average hours worked and average of daily wages of the workers during 1875-1891. The document states that during 1875 and 1885 that working hours remain the same meanwhile the wages differ. We can also see that during 1875 still 1879 the wages decreases, until 1886 the wages finally start to rise. As the years go by, we are able to see that the working hours decreased and the wages increased. By this document we can see the effect of the organized labor, and it’s related to the DBQ question. It’s perfect for the DBQ because it’s a bias is a survey. Its source is “Historical Statistics of United States.”
Document B
This document is rather a bias than a really true. It is a piece of an editorial published in The New York Times, in 1877. The author of this document states two points of views. He first states that the strikes are a hopeless case because the men that produce them are ignorant. Nevertheless, later on he states that strikes are a good quality for the men. The document reflects the low degree of effect from the riots and strikes by the organized labors. The document reflection also has to do with the time period. The year in which the document or article was published in the chart before we learn that the wages were decreased. This is a definitely a bias, since big companies like NYT were in favor of industries and companies and made people read things that criticized the labor unions.
