Mexican Americans
Mexican Americans originated from the ancestry of Spanish settlers and Native Americans from Mexico and Central America. Most of these Native Americans were from the Mayan and Aztec tribes. Mexican Americans have always been closely tied with immigration. When they are out of work or are unwanted for jobs they immigrate mostly to the USA. Religion and family are two very important factors that contribute to the Mexican Americans way of life.
The early times for the Mexican Americans in the U.S. were varied. Some were very rich and held huge amounts of land, while others were dirt poor and could hardly find a way to survive. Commercial towns began to sprout up along the Rio Grande River. The river carried a lot of traffic to the commercial towns. Arizona and New Mexico offered many Mexican Americans the same type of protection that the U.S. Government offered against some of the Native American tribes.
In California, life was not so easy. It was mostly dominated by the gold miners while Anglos controlled the wealth. After the Mexican-American War Mexico acknowledged the annexation of Texas by the USA. They also ceded California, New Mexico and most of Arizona to the USA for 15 million dollars. In exchange for this the USA offered 75,000 Mexican Nationalists citizenship. These people remained on the annexed land after the war was over. The United States was to guarantee property rights, religious freedom, and cultural integrity. Cultural integrity is the right to continue Mexican and Spanish traditions while also still being allowed to use the Spanish language.
Many Americans jump to conclusions that Mexicans are illegal immigrants. Although many are illegal there are many that are legal. During the 19th century many settlers that traveled west were already prejudice of Mexican Americans because of their mixed blood.
