Considering that Hinduism lacks a uniting belief system, what makes up the Hindu religion?
Hinduism is not a religion in the normal sense, but it is a set of traditions and beliefs evolved over a long period of time. There all admire the ancient scriptures called Vedas. There are certain fundamental concepts of Hinduism is the belief in the ultimate reality called Brahman (universal soul) and it’s identification with the A atman (individual soul). All creatures go through a cycle of birth and re-birth. The status of being in each birth is determined by the principal of karma.
The ultimate God is supposed to be Brahman, the absolute reality, which is formless and infinite. For the sake of worshipping the infinite reality with the limited human minds, Gods had been personified and associated with different attributes. Hindus traditions of sacred symbols are the auspicious symbol is Swastika, which stands for purity of the soul. The four directions which had been shown in the symbol represent for Vedas and their harmonious existence, (www.hinduism.ygoy.com)

What are cultural and societal influences that have made Hinduism vital to the region in which it originated?
I believe Hinduism is the least of influential of everyday life by devotional traditions; their lives are so evolved with spiritual meaningful aspects that spiritually they are never far from ones mind. Rituals from a cradle to the cremating ground, the Hindu’s life are wrapped up in rituals. There life stages of attaining spiritual realization or liberation is thought to take at least a lifetime probably many lifetimes.
