Universal Health Care

40 Million uninsured citizens in the wealthiest country in the world. The statement is so strong the number needs to be reported 40 million uninsured. This number should not only sound absurd, but it also should be unacceptable. The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee access to health comes as a right of citizenship. How can there be so many people left out in the cold in this land of opportunity.

Now what we must first understand is that the U.S. is still the most advanced society in regards to health. The best doctors and facilities in the world are located within this country. However, the standard of health care has steadily declined in the past sixty years. Today the U.S. ranks 20th and 21st in life expectancy for men and women respectively in the world. Whereas in 1945 they were ranked first in both, and just recently as 1960 they were 13th and 17th in both. The health care standard has steadily declined while of the same time the U.S. spends 40% more per capita than any other industrialized country with universal health care. So the problem in regards to the uninsured is not material based, rather it is an administration as to how the health crisis should be solved. However as this debate has dragged on more and more people has fallen victim to rising health care costs. The main culprits for those rising costs are outrageous health care premiums.

Since health care premiums are skyrocketing much faster than inflation, which stunts economic growth of many businesses, are finding it more cost effective to not offer insurance to employees. This in turn has a profound domino effect. Just because these individuals are not insured doesn’t mean they don’t receive services. On the contrary there are numerous free clinics, which offer services to indigent people.
