a. Java- it is an island that is part of the East Indies in the Pacific Ocean
b. Malaysia- it includes the tip of the S.E.A. continent and pert of Singapore
c. Singapore- it is a large island off the coast of S.E.A.
d. Manila- a small city on the Philippine Islands
2. Identify:
a. Culture System-the way that a certain culture runs and works to run smoothly and efficiently
b. French-the group of people who were in control of some of the East Indies
c. Indochina-the southern section of S.E.A.
d. Mongkut-he is the king of Thailand
e. Emilio Aguinaldo-this is the ruler of the Philippines
3. Define:
a. Protectorate- a country that has its own government but whose policies are directed by an outside power.
b. Encomienda-a right to demand taxes or labor from the people living on the land.

a. Things like coffee, sugar, and tea brought in the Europeans to S.E.A.
b. The Europeans were looking for more land to conquer to expand their empire.
5. All of these already large and powerful countries where in search of expanding their empires for possibly gaining more money to become stronger. They found the S.E.A. islands and took them over.
6. The Europeans influenced the eating habits and farming habits, their daily lifestyles and practices, and also they did slightly affect the religious habits of these people.
