Gun Control
Gun control is not one issue, but many. To some people gun control is a crime issue; to others it is a rights issue. Gun control is a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others. Within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control legislation and those who want less, on both sides of this issue, opinions range from moderate to extreme. Like most topics relating to government and its ruling ability, the topic of gun control is based heavily on political affiliation. Since the 1950’s the majority of the Republican Party have strongly opposed gun control efforts, and have been aiming to shoot down legislation enacted at the local, state, and national levels. The republican viewpoint of anti-gun control has strong backing by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and many other gun control-lobbying organizations. The party insists on increased enforcement of laws already in place and stronger penalties for those who disobey, rather than creating entirely new gun control measures. On the other hand the popular view among the Democratic Party is for the enactment of new legislation for gun control. This party bases their argument on a loose interpretation of the constitution believing that the individual has the right to bear arms but under reasonable regulation. The Brady Campaign and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) are organizations that back the Democratic Party’s views of pro gun control.
Guns are not for everyone. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately. Our society has passed laws regulating the ownership and use of firearms, and more legislation is being considered. Most of this legislation restricts, to some degree, the rights of individuals to possess or use firearms. Some restrictions may be necessary, but some recent legislation may have gone too far. Society benefits from firearms in the hands of responsible citizens

    The topic of gun control has been on the rise for almost twenty years. In 1994 congress backed a ban on assault weapons however it expired in 2004. With the amount of gun violence growing more and more each year, it has brought up new concerns with gun control and who should be able to possess them, if any. Top democrats in the House of Representatives unveiled a proposal to decrease gun violence. This proposal was much like the one offered by President Obama last month. This proposal included the ban on semi-automatic assault weapons. Mike Thompson, chairman of the 12-member House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task that drafted the proposals, “We know its going to be tough, but we also know this is important.” There have been many different arguments on whether or not new restrictions on firearms should be put in place, many argue the 1st amendment and the right to bear arms. While others argue that while Americans have the right to own guns, the government has the responsibility to impose restrictions for the public good. In addition to outlawing semi-automatic weapons and imposing limits on high-capacity ammunition clips, the House Democratic package and the one advanced by the White House states that all gun buyers be subject to background checks and provide for improvements in mental health services.…

    With heated debates and arguments about gun control, politicians are forced into “trying” to find a solution. Gun control is a popular subject though does have slow process process in America. Twice in the past two years the gun issue has reached the nation’s highest court. In the 2008 Supreme Court case District of Columbia v. Heller the court ruled that the Constitution protects an individual’s right to own a gun for personal use. But the decision only applied to federal laws and failed to address local and state laws.     Gun rights and gun control are always hot items during any political discussion, whether it is between peers or politicians. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in, another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. As we near the end of the 20th century the use of guns has changed significantly. It is also argued that by making it difficult for guns to be bought and registered for the American public there is a threat to the personal safety of American families everywhere. However controlling the sale and distribution of firearms is necessary because of the homicide rate involving guns. In 1988 there were 9000 handgun related murders in America. Metropolitan centers and some suburban communities of America are setting new records for homicides by handguns. Larger Metropolitan centers have ten times the murder rate of all Western Europe.
