Q4) Given an analytical report on the psychologist, Sean’s counselling approaches. Comment on the session when both therapist and client did not speak at all through the entire counselling session.
(I) Introduction
Sean used REBT in his counselling approach with Will. The series of his psychotherapy sessions with Sean took place both inside his office and in the outdoor. With the pain and angst that Will had, powerful, Sean’s therapy method worked for Will.
(II) Counselling Approaches
Countering Will’s own fears During one of the counselling session, Sean pointed out that Will was quick of anticipating that his future would fail. Whether it was Will’s own interpersonal relationship with Skylar or even helping his own self, Will had allowed Sean’s counselling from going through to him so he can avoided the risk of any emotional pain. There was even a time when Will refused to give an honest reply to Sean's query about what he wanted to do with his life which then Sean showed him the door for him to leave.
Sean tried to counter Will’s own fears by sharing with him at the next therapy session that Sean indeed was also victim of child abuse, just like Will. At first, Will was defensive and resentful at Sean's repeated reassurances that "It's not your fault," but he eventually broke down in tearful acknowledgment. This later brought Will to go through some self-reflection. Eventually Will decided to cease being a victim of his own inner fears and he began to take charge of his life.
From the above, Sean tried to change Will’s irrational behaviour (IR) to rational behaviour (RB) by curbing his wrong thinkings, which subsequently changed his wrong feelings and eventually his wrong actions.
