History
The story of how Price Chopper was born into existence is an age-old story of determination and destiny.   In 1900, a man named Lewis Golub came to Ellis Island from Russia.   He arrived in the United States with only 50 cents in his pocket, but was still able to acquire himself a home in the city of Schenectady.   He had enough confidence that he would be able to succeed with the many opportunities this country presented him with.   Lewis had two sons, Ben, and Bill.
On November 17, 1932 Ben and Bill opened the area’s first one-stop shopping outlet in Green Island, New York.   Dubbed “The Public Service Market”, it offered a little bit of everything: groceries, meat, fresh produce, dry goods, clothing, a barber shop, and a cafeteria all under one roof.   This was unlike most traditional grocery stores.
In 1933 the company took on the name Central Market.   This name was chosen because of the location of the building, which was only five minutes from the city’s Central Park.   The opening of the first Central Market was...
