Abstract
Currently a massive debate has formed over the use and labeling of genetically modified crops. These crops have had their genes altered to allow them to fend off insects, weeds, draught, and become more nutritious. The debate has exploded in California, the largest agricultural state that will set precedence with its decision for the future of the union. No scientific evidence has been found that GM crops are unsafe for human life or the environment but still persistence presses on.

Genetically Engineered Crops: It’s Best for the Environment Genetically Modified crops have become a pressing health and environmental concern in the past twenty years that has sparked debates on the use and labeling of such crops. GM crops are staple crops such as corn, cotton, wheat, etc. that have had their genes scientifically altered to “turn on” genes already found in the crops. These “turned on” genes allow the GM crops to resists draught, fight off insects, reduce the need for pesticides, or possibly transcribe vaccines into the crops. The debate over GM crops being used and labeled in our grocery stores as genetically modified is brought to the forefront in the US in the state of California. California is by far the largest agricultural state in the union which consequently means that California’s decision will be used as precedence for the rest of the union on the topic of GM crops and their wholesale. Genetically manufactured crops should not be marked with a sticker in supermarkets and should be grown without penalty but with restrictions in the United States. GM crops are one of the biggest scientific

    Economic Issues With government regulation of genetically modified organisms in food sources and consumable products the questions remains: How does this affect the state of affairs regarding the economy? Essentially the driving force of the economic slide of GMO foods to non-GMO foods is based on new research and information that is being shared among the skeptics.     The first ethical issue I perceive in the case is that both parties, when discussing the subject, base their arguments more on feelings and assumptions than on scientific facts, which I find unethical when discussing something as important as health and alimentation. Also, there is the pro-GM vision, that claims that the “risks should be judged once scientific consensus has been reached.” I think that this argument in not ethical, since the fact that scientific groups haven’t completely agreed on the side effects of GM foods doesn’t mean that these risks are not present. On the other side, I also see that the argument of anti-GM foods to be vague, since deliberately slowing down research and progress “in order that society may digest innovations of past years” means to stop human development without a reason, which I find unethical. Another ethical issue present is the claim of anti-GM foods groups of the studies of GM-crops being biased and reaching conclusions without sufficient evidence. Also, it is very likely that companies producing pesticides and herbicide-resistant seeds exaggerate the benefits of their products while diminishing or hiding the side effects, in order to make more sales. Finally, according to GM proponents, “detractors often exaggerate environmental hazards, do not substantiate their claims with scientific evidence, and are simply reacting out of fear”, which is an unethical reaction to a field that might end world hunger.…

    They argue that the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has discovered through animal testing that GMOs to lead dangerous health risks from accelerated aging and immune system problems passing by organ damaging and infertility. According to the physicists of the AAEM, there is a direct relation between GMOs and these health problems (Smith 48). In fact, in 2009, the AAEM urged all doctors to prescribe all their patients non-GMOs diets as, according to them, many of the cases where doctors could not identify the cause of the problem were caused by GMOs (Smith 48). Could one of these problem be allergies? Consumers Choice Counsel stated that if GMO food is beneficial, then the producers should be willing to have it labeled (Gay). Consumers have the right to know the content of their food, and the circumstances under which it was produced. Bacteria has become resistant to antibiotics, since antibiotics have been added to animal food, and is also used for plant breeding (Gay).     The two articles I have chosen are both peer-reviewed and have two different opinions about GMO’s. The first article, titled “GMO’s and Global Justice” by Kristian Toft, is against the use of GMO’s, explaining how they are bad for us as human beings and for our environment. Her biggest concern is that we do not know the extent of what these genetically modified foods are doing to our bodies because of the lack of long-term affect testing. When trans-fats were first introduced, corporations battled to get them onto our grocery shelves. It is only decades later that this once novel food has been proven to be extremely unhealthful. This could be a glance into the future of GMO’s. It is similarly a concern that GMO’s in food are causing an increase in allergic reactions. The process of genetically modifying a plant or animal adds new proteins that weren’t indigenous to the original plant or animal, causing an allergic reaction increase when ingested in the human body. Also, some GMO foods have had antibiotic features added to them so they are resistant to certain diseases and viruses. (University of Queensland) By stating this quote, Dr. Carter is critiquing how both sides convey their arguments to each other.
