Globalisation

The way globalisation impacts upon people specifically in developing countries will be the main focus of this essay. The idea that globalisation is a social issue will be presented and discussed. Globalisation will be defined and I will challenge what originally influenced my opinion of globalisation. I will discuss how my opinion of globalisation has changed during the last three months and highlight the reasons for my change of opinion. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation will be undertaken. An analysis of the factors that changed my opinion and the questions they posed to me will be explained. The process in which my opinion changed due to an increase in knowledge of this issue will be discussed. All ideas explored will be linked to current sociological theories including Capitalism and Post Modernism. Globalisation can be described as a process as well as a condition that is applicable worldwide (Van Krieken, Habisis, Smith, Hutchins, Haralambos, Holborn, 2006). As Global Education states, There are many different definitions of globalisation, but most acknowledge the greater movement of people, goods, capital and ideas due to increased economic integration which in turn is propelled by increased trade and investment. It is like moving towards living in a border-less world (“Globalisation,” 2009 para.1). The idea that our world has changed from local and become global through information technology, mass culture and the power the global companies have on trade agreements is significant (Van Krieken et al). Before I started studying this year, I had heard of globalisation but I had never looked up the definition or thought about the implications of globalisation. I guessed the definition of globalisation was the world had become more accessible and products and produce would be available more widely.
