Globalisation – argumentative essay
Globalisation is a really widespread topic. There are millions of definitions, opinions, organisations and perspectives because it concerns the whole world. This essay is a try to give some information and to explain my view of the issue.
The starting point of globalisation is not defined yet, but most scientists think it started in the sixteenth century, when the first circumnavigation of the “Magellan” took place. Though, the first sentiment of a “united world” was formed by the establishment of the world time zones. At that time international communication started as well.
Globalisation is an effect of capitalism – huge companies want to expand into the whole world for more profit – and become multinational corporations. The main idea was the possibility of buying everything from everywhere in the world. This was feasible because information technology developed so fast and made worldwide communication over telephone and internet possible.
One of the great advantages of this global network is the cultural exchange and interaction. It became much easier to study abroad or to work in a foreign country. Exotic food, new cooking styles and restaurants came up. Trips to remote areas became much easier and cheaper. Scientists can hold lessons in universities at the other side of the world from their living room. These are just some positive side aspects of globalisation.
The problem is that globalisation is capitalistic and so are negative effects as well. First there are all this big transnational concerns that gain more and more influence. The objective, of course, is to raise the profit of the company. The price that has to be paid to reach this is very high: the exploitation of the environment and of poor countries.
There is no chance for them to get involved in the process. The agricultural goods have to become cheaper...
