Introduction:
Drinking water is not only a booming sector[1], but also a controversial one. On the one hand the good is getting rarer and therefore more expensive. Fortune called water “one of the world’s great business opportunities,” noting that it “promises to be to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th.”[2] On the other hand water has to be seen as a human right, which the state feels responsible for and therefore is possibility that privat enterprises could be forced to leave the market is substantial.
This paper deals with Suez, the world’s greatest water firm, and its CEO Gérard Mestrallet, who has led the conglomerate since more then ten years.
Biography of Gérard Mestrallet:
Gérard Mestrallet was born on the 1st of April in 1949 in Paris. He studied at the famous “École Polytech” before moving onto the “École Aviation Civile”, the “Institute for Study of Politics” and finally graduated as a top student from the “National School of Administration” – one of the best educational institutions in France.[3]
After having worked for the ministry of transport he became a consultant for Jacques Delors – the minister of finance and later president of the EU-Commission.[4]
In 1984 he joined the “Compagnie de Suez” as vice-president for special projects. In 1986 he became executive vice president, then executive director and chairman of the management committee of Société Générale de Belgique (1991) before finally becoming the CEO of Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux in 1995.[5]
