George Orwell 1984 Anaylsis

Part of being human is a search to find someone who you share a personal bond with through physical attraction and similar interests and personality traits. Once this type of relationship is found both of the people involved grow together formulating opinions on certain topics learning from each other and sharing an outlook on life that is altogether their own. If a person does not know who they are and has no freedom to find out then he will never know what to look for in a partner. Intimate relationships interconnect with personal freedom and self expression through a cycle that leads them all together. George Orwell’s cautionary tale “1984” plays out this cycle in a dystopian world.
When two people with completely different views are joined by force it will result in a dull lifeless relationship. This is part of the reason why “Big Brother” arranged a marriage between Winston the quiet rebel and Katharine the good girl. When there is no attraction and nothing in common the relationship will not grow. Without the two encouraging each other to think for themselves there is no threat to the party.
Another reason for this marriage would be so that if Winston were to say or do anything against the party Katherine would turn him in without thinking twice. Everything in the relationship was routine including the sex. When everything is looked at as a job then there is no room for self expression and intimacy will never blossom.
When someone is alone that person tends to have doubts about their feelings and have tendencies to hesitate when it comes to their actions. For instance in the book “1984” the main character Winston spent weeks getting up enough courage to write in a journal. On the other hand, it only took him a week and a half to dodge a very oppressing government and find a hiding place to have sexual relations with Julia. It is a lot easier to disobey when you have somebody with you. Human beings are social creatures.
