Gay Marriage

Gay marriages have been a debate for many years. Some states have legalized same sex marriage, and other states are pushing for gay marriage to be outlawed. The moral debate is that many people view marriage as between man and woman. The other side of the debate argues that it is an individual right, and that the government should not have a say so in this topic. Two major thinkers, Dr. King and Sigmund Freud, debate homosexuality either by civil rights or by the development of the super ego. Darwin, on the other side of the debate, shows how homosexuality is not natural through his theory of Survival of the Fittest. I believe that it is a persons’ right to love and marry whomever he or she chooses. A person has the right to be happy and no one has the right to take that away from them.

People support gay marriage not just with basic human rights, but through the protection of laws. Without marriage, lesbian and gay couples are not entitled to help make medical decisions concerning their loved ones and do not receive visitation rights to hospitals. Partners of police and firemen are not entitled to their partner’s service pensions if they are killed in the line of duty. Also they are not entitled to health benefits like other heterosexual partnerships[1]. People believe that it is clearly discrimination, and that they should be able to have these rights and benefits like the rest of heterosexual couples.

Homosexuals also believe that if gay marriages were made legal in the United States, it would integrate gay culture into an open society. By doing this is would have a positive effect on society. Through marriage the people are made responsible for their spouses and children, and what happens to them. Instead of the government and tax payers having to carry the burden for medical care and other expenses, when a person gets married it becomes their responsibility to cover these expenses.
