Gay Family Policy Essay
These responsibilities are often neglected when being applied to Black gay men. The idea of a networked family structure is very prominent within families of colour, and so this puts Black gay men or msm at a particularly vulnerable spot, as they are being rejected of one of the very common structures their other family members, who if are heterosexual, are provided with. For people of colour, it is not merely the acceptance of the law, or the dominant social groups, the importance also lies with the acceptance of their community. If the community does not accept them, they are stripped of their networking family structure ties and assistance, which leaves them in an extremely vulnerable position (Cahill et. al., 2003). This policy is fairly new itself, and has already been introduced to Bill C-38, the Civil Marriage Act. This policy was implemented in order to give the government discretion in choosing how to regulate a marriage. Family policy covers a wide range of aspects such as: domestic violence, gender equality, child rearing and sexual reproduction. In Canada this policy mainly focuses on raising the children and providing assistance for this. The Civil Marriage Act, does not specifically focus on children at all, and so it leaves the adoption centers with a lot of discretion to deem whether or not the same-sex couple is eligible for adoption of a child, because the Civil Marriage Act specifically argues of equality when accessing marriage, not anything specifically on adoption (Rose, 2012). Although it would be deemed as discriminatory if an adoption center were to deny a Black male gay couple from adopting a child, it is easy to showcase different reasons, other than sexual and racial oreitnation, to denying access to
