Gatsby Money Vs Happiness

“Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has, the more one wants,” quoted by Benjamin Franklin. Money can’t buy happiness because materials are short lived, human connection is more important, and wealth undermines people’s ability to savor positive events from the sheer abundance. Money will accumulate, but it is easy to chase more and more until you realize you’re not actually living.
Happiness that is based off of product is fugitive. Once a product is bought, it starts to decrease in value and something new is being created to outdo the old. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby chased after Daisy for years. Daisy is what made him feel whole and he had chased wealth and done unfavorable activities just to receive her love again. This money chipped away at his core and turned him into a whole different person. He even changed his name and stopped contact with his family. This new money made him feel lonely and even when he threw his lavish parties, he would stand alone in the crowd. At the end, he was very unhappy and he died that way. People are what is important in life, as Gatsby learned the hard way. Wealth lasts only for a short time, whereas connections with people will last past death. There is little happiness in wealth, it may remove some of the physical problems such as bills, but there will always be the sorrow that other people inflict.
