Computer games are very popular with young people, but they are also

controversial. For example, opponents argue that they are harmful to brain

development, cause children to neglect reading and encourage violent or anti-social

behaviour. Supporters, however, claim that the games help to develop advanced

thinking skills and are often played cooperatively rather than alone. What is the

truth of the matter? Our task in this Thesis is to find out. In the past, not many

people really cared about computer games being violent; it was not a hot topic as it

is today. But within the past few years, with games becoming more realistic and

violent, there have been certain unlawful acts committed by individuals who have

been known to play such games. Many blame these games for what happened, but

many disagree. And it is these two viewpoints we are going to explore, and also

present our own. Those who believe games containing violent gameplay and images

are to blame for some murders would often assume that because the perpetrator

plays such games, the games must be the problem. Reasons for thinking this may

include the fact that the gun crime in some countries has gone up during the time

these games have been around. The way some see it is that if a child sees and plays

games that contain, for example, gang violence, from a young age, then the child

may be more likely to think of such things as acceptable. And if the child grows up

with these games then, it is said, they might be more likely to commit such acts.
