Functions of Management
Introduction
The framework of conducting business is changing and requires managers to make the business successful. A manager must think outside the box and be able to adapt to an ever changing business world. Management is the process of getting activities completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people. The four management principles that are still relevant and needed in today’s business world. These management principles include planning, organizing, leading and controlling. These four fundamentals of management are needed in all companies from start-ups to established corporations and none of these businesses would be successful without these four fundamental functions of management.
Planning
In a corporate environment, “planning is the management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue” (Bateman & Snell, 2007, p. 16). At Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. this process is known as the Business Plan. A Business Plan is created each year for each office, region and the entire firm. Months before the business planning starts, project managers and practice builders analyze and research the existing market and try to get an idea of where the market will be next year. This is achieved by phone calls to existing clients and cold calls to potentially new clients to see what type and how many projects are planned to start next year. All of the market research and leads acquired by each project manager is used to create his or her job start goal next year. The office or division goal is a conglomerate of its project managers. The regional goals are made up of its office or division goals and the firm’s goals is the total of its regional goals. After this is done the goals are analyzed again and adjusted accordingly based on the previous years performance and next years...
