In 1835 Frederick Douglas was seventeen years old. Douglas is the son of Harriet Bailey and his father is rumored to be a white man. Douglas mother was separated from him when he was an infant. Baby slaves were often taken away from their mother and sent away to some far farm during this time. The baby is usually taken care by an old woman who was too old to be working in the field.
Douglas mother was hired by Mr. Stewart who lived about twelve miles away from Douglas’s home. Douglas’s mother, Harriet Bailey, sometimes visit him by walking on foot after her day’s work is over. Harriet Bailey visit to Douglas were usually short and usually very little communication took place. She usually put him to sleep and leaves before he wakes up.
Frederick Douglas mother died when he was seven years old somewhere close to Lee’s Mill which was own by one of his master. He was not allowed to visit or see her while she was having her illness, death or burial.
Frederick Douglas first master was named Anthony. Anthony owns about two or three farms and about 30 slaves. Mr. Plummer who oversee Anthony’s farm usually whip his aunt in the middle of the night when he was a child. This early incident in his life made him realized the horror of slavery. His aunt usually gets whip because she disobey her master’s order which was not to leave the farm in he evening and avoid Lloyd Ned. Lloyd Ned was a man who had special interest in her. She was caught doing both and was tied up and whip. Douglas hid in the closet long before the whipping is over. Douglas lived with his grand mother who took care of younger children so never saw this brutality and whipping before
He spent two years at Colonel Lloyd’s plantation that is in Talbot County. Lloyd’s plantation consists of tobacco, corn, and wheat. Douglas monthly allowance consisted of eight pounds of pork o fish, one bashed of corn meal. His yearly clothing...
