A lot of this has been pushed along by government programs and food companies looking to make a quicker profit, at the cost of the health of their customers. Corn is no longer corn. However, the author accuses Westgate for concealing this data from the community. Which identifies a little persuasion that it might be better to not purchase anything at all but instead to plant their own crops so that it will echo in their health that better option is to harvest your own food than to rely on a product that are not beneficial at all. Also, the author states that Monsanto (pg. 408-410), the CEO of the company, produced or invented a form of growing hormone just to increase the production of milk but did not thought of the consequences that is made have on people in the future. The treatment of animals in animal farms is greatly disrupted because of major food industries and the financial costs. Cows are genetically and evolutionary modified to eat grass but the farm owner are forcing the cows to eat corn because it is cheaper and corn makes them fat more quickly. This is just one example of the many of the mistreatments of farm animals that was talked about in this documentary. Since cows are meant to eat grass and not corn this high corn diet results in E. coli formation. E. Coli formation is not only a product of the diet but also a product in farm animal lifestyle. The cows stand ankle deep in their manure for most parts of the day if not the entire day, meaning that if one cow was to develop the disease than the entire cow population on the farm will also acquire the disease. This disease is then carried form the farms to the slaughterhouses and form the slaughterhouses to our grocery stores. The documentary reports that this transfer in disease resulted in a death of a young boy from eating a burger at Jack in the Box.…

I believe that owners of the feedlots should not feed their cattle grain, even though it makes the cattle grow faster and is probably cheaper. I personally believe that everyone should do what is healthier for the cattle and those eating the cattle. Instead they should allow the cattle to graze, allowing them to become more lean and healthy. If they were to do this then the meat from the cattle would have less fat, therefore be healthier. Instead they not only feed the cattle corn, but also give them antibiotics to keep the animal “healthy.” In reality, this is not making them any healthier, but instead is producing a meat that is a larger money maker for the cattle…

Buying any meat, dairy, and egg products is buying from the same four large companies that run the meat industry in America today. By using the Confined/Concentrated Animal Feeding Systems or CAFOs, these companies have made it to the top of the meat industry. CAFOs systems are unethical and pose a huge risk to our environment and our own health. Although these animals are being raised to be consumed does not mean they should live in small pins with no exercise, stand in their own feces, and be pumped with growth hormones and antibiotics. Singer’s article criticizes factory farms for industrializing their farming practices and sacrificing good animal husbandry practices for increases in production. Singer indicates the ridiculous amount of animals affected by factory farm mistreatment by stating “[t]he use and abuse of animals raised for food far exceeds, in sheer numbers of animals affected, any other kind of mistreatment” (“Down on” 19). The article, “Vegetarian is the New Prius”, written by Kathy Freston, discusses the amount of contribution that livestock actively plays in the most crucial and serious environmental problem, from a local scale to global scale. Freston writes that the amount of livestock raised in United States soil is the main cause of air pollution, land degradation, water shortage, water pollution, biodiversity, and especially aids to global warming. This article attempts to convince readers to cut meat out of their diet and to become vegetarians, so that less livestock would be raised to feed the people and environmental issues would be cut down. Although it is true that Freston provides the audience with solid, legitimate factual arguments concerning the brutal slaughtering and consumption of livestock by humans, she fails to address the opposing argument. Although I am a personal fan of vegetarian foods, I disagree with Freston, primarily because my family has raised me on chicken and other meats. I believe that there will be livestock whether a lot of people change their diets and become vegetarians or not. At the University of Chicago, researches concluded that feeding animals for the production of meat, eggs, and dairy products requires growing upwards of ten times as many crops needed than if we just went without livestock. According to a report done by the United Nations animal agriculture takes up 70% of all agricultural land, and 30% of the total land surface of the planet. Upon seeing these disturbing facts, I do not believe that society will never 100% convert to a vegetarian lifestyle.
