First Impressions May Be Deceiving
First Impressions May Be Deceiving

Michael Jordan

For many years now, people have been fool by appearances. Someone may look at the exterior of an object and expect one thing when actually the exact opposite is waiting inside for them. For example, an unexpecting person picks off a grape from the bunch and bites into the fruit while dreaming of a mouthful of juicy, sweet grape but in reality receives a surprisingly bitter splash with the first bite. Or when a person first looks at a power vision 3-D picture they only see mass chaos until a few short seconds later a sailboat evolves out of the picture floating among the earlier seen chaos. When visiting Madison,
Wisconsin, someone may pass by the UW-Fieldhouse and mistake it as a barn instead of a basketball arena. So too, the Karrmann Library can be easily mistaken for a bank as you come upon it from the exterior. The first feature about the Elton S. Karrmann Library that makes it seem as if it were a bank is the solid construction of the library. Much like the construction of a bank, the library was also constructed with security and protection in mind. Also, the impressive exterior of the library resembles that of a modern bank. The concrete support pillars not only add strength but also give the library this impressive look of a bank. These light white-grayish, square pillars are 2 by 2 ft. and almost half the way up them there are two engraved lines that run all the way around them about 6 in. from the other.
Concrete, a sign of strength, is also used in the patio around the tower entrance. This grayish colored concrete was poured in slabs of 3 by 3 ft. sections. Concrete was also used as dividers between floors. Between each floor, the redish-brown, 4 by 8 in. bricks are split up by a light grayish horizontal concrete layer. The items used in the construction of this building show the strength needed for the protection of a bank. Secondly, the setting of the Karrmann

When one first walks in the Atlantic branch library one first sees the library’s light purple painted walls, the librarian’s teal U shaped desk, and the large window behind the desk with a banner that states “For the second time! Objective: For this essay, you will be analyzing Erik Larson’s style, revealing what devices he uses to convey his message(s) to his readers. The majority of the paper should be comprised of detailed close readings that analyze how his use of language contributes to an overall effect on the reader. Feel free to draw evidence from your journal (but don’t do so blindly, without considering if there are better options! You may end up taking only general ideas from the journal.). Your analysis should show real depth and insight, going beyond the obvious, and beyond what we have discussed in class. Your paper should also show an awareness of the entire novel. Focusing only on one section may hopelessly distort your analysis.…

Did you ever do something so embarrassing when you met somebody for the first time that you thought they would think you were strange or weird. Well many people don’t know this but you can change somebody's perception of you by letting them get to know you. Based on my experiences I believe you can change the way people think of you because you may have been in a bad mood so you didn't want to be bothered, when you met the person you could have had a totally different outlook on life and now you've changed, and you could have been younger and didn't really know about rules and consequences and you are beginning to grow up.…

“The Impressions” were just one of the many music groups that affected America during the Civil Rights Movement. They were known for many styles of music including gospel, R&B, soul, and doo-wop. The forming of “The Impressions” came through a combination then separation of music groups. Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield were both from Chicago although Butler was actually born in Mississippi. They met in Chicago where together as school friends they sang in a numerous amount of local gospel groups. As teenagers they joined a doo-wop group known as “The Roosters.” The set of men they joined, Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and Arthur Brooks, were all from Chattanooga, Tennessee. It would only be a year until the name changed to “Jerry Butler & the Impressions.” However, Jerry Butler would soon leave the group to go on to have his own solo career which was actually very successful. Fred Cash who was an original Roosters member would eventually join the group. In 1961, “The Impressions” would release their first post-Butler single called “Gypsy woman.” Becoming #2 on the R&B charts and #20 on the pop charts, this single was their biggest one to date. Although future releases failed to compare to the success of “Gypsy Woman”. This led to the departure of the Brook brothers in 1962. Now only three of them left, “The Impressions” linked up with producer Johnny Pate. He would help them update their style and sound. The result was magnificent. “It’s All Right” became a gold single that topped the R&B charts. The group would go on to release many other singles. After a while Curtis Mayfield would write songs that had a social and political message. This included a major song of the Civil Rights Movement, “People Get Ready.” It continues to be the group’s most well-known song. Curtis Mayfield would leave the group in 1970. It seemed like all was lost for “The Impressions” after this. Their lull continued until 1974 where new members Ralph…

When I first came to the University of Cincinnati, I did not know where I could get lost in my thoughts, writing, or even a book. It did not take long for me to realize, however, that Langsam library would soon be that place. When I first recall walking into Langsam Library, I did not think much of it. In fact, it appeared to me to be just a monotonous and common library. Computers were scattered around the area, books were neatly organized on shelves. Overall, I was pretty uninterested with the glum building.…

People always like to trust their intuition. When people see others for the first time, they immediately like or dislike them based on their look or their speech, even their clothing. They use intuition to ensure a person, but actually a good-looking man will be a bad guy. William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth. It is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. It talks about the kingdom, the prophecy and blood. In Macbeth, things that characters believe are not true. Throughout the play, trust is misused, the prophecies are misunderstood and eventually power destroys the characters.…

We have heard them all. African Americans are lazy and incompetent workers. Hispanics are all drug-dealers. The Irish are heavy drinkers. These are all stereotypes. Stereotyping is a problem that refuses to go away. It recurs, across various contexts and discourses, as a divisive and troubling issue, and remains a central source of contention in the politics of representation. Many stereotypes exist: different ones towards racial groups, women, the elderly, the mentally ill, fat people, homosexuals, the physically handicapped, and individuals with AIDS, to name just a few. Stereotypes can have negative outcomes both for the individuals who are the target of prejudice and for society at large.…

Making a great first impression is something that most aim for when venturing out into any social setting. In the poem “In a prominent Bar in Secaucus One Day” by X.J. Kennedy the author uses the main character to make an impression along with a message. Taking place in a prominent bar, Kennedy introduces us to the boisterous, passionate, and somewhat enlightening main character. An older woman who had dreams of being successful, a good life but let her beauty become her only means to success. Instead she lived a fast life, now dilapidated from the abuse of drugs, alcohol, and sex over the years. The older woman wants to share her story; through song she sang to the other patrons who have decided to listen in. In the poem the women seems to be an older working girl, she informs through her wonderful singing voice and twisted story that life is short and beauty fades, so try not to get by on your looks alone. For she is the perfect example of where you would end up, which would be in a bar old, and alone with nothing to show for except your story.…

    Social Perception

Social perception has many psychological concepts, which include The Primacy and Recency Effect and The Halo Effect. Firstly, the Primacy Effect is the theory that a person’s initial impression of a subject based on information given, is one in which they are most likely to remember; whereas the Recency Effect focuses on the impact of further information given about a subject later on. A very striking study was conducted by the psychologist Luchins. In 1957, Luchins produced two description of ‘Jim’ to two groups of people. Group A were given a paragraph to read describing Jim as an extrovert, therefore, in reading the description, came to the conclusion that Jim was warm and friendly. Group B were given a paragraph which described Jim as an introvert, thus producing the opposite effect from Group A. This proved that, based on the information we receive, we automatically make an overall assumption about a subject. However, Luchins then asked the two groups to read a comic for 15 minutes and then exchanged the descriptions between the two groups. After both groups had read the second description, most changed their opinion of Jim after receiving different information, consequently, demonstrating the Recency Effect (Atkinson 2006).…

Impression Formation, Implicit Personality Theory, the use of constructs, and attribution theories are all related on the process in which you develop perceptions about people and how you then try to interrupt their behaviors. The first step in this Process is described as the Impression Formation which can be defined on page 68 as “The theory that explains how you develop perceptions about people and how you maintain and use those perceptions to interrupt their behaviors.” So this is when you first meet someone and based on how they act you perceiving them in your head as they acted. The Next step in this process is called the Implicit Personality Theory which is defined as “Your unique set of beliefs and hypotheses about what people are like.” So after meeting someone you take that first initial meeting of them and base in how you think they will act the next time you see them. After this step we use of constructs which is defined as “Bipolar Quality used to classify people”. After meeting them we use constructs to classify them. Then after that we use the attribution theory to draw our conclusions about the person. The Attribution Theory is defined as “The theory that explains how you generate explanations for a person’s behaviors.” So in this process all of these terms described above are how you judge and classify a person after that first initial meeting. Now hopefully I have described how all of these terms are related in how we go about developing perceptions based on seen behavior.…

These deities are believed that they are a part of human lives and that they control the nature and events that happen to their lives.
