Finding Yourself Is To Lose Yourself In The Service Of Others Analysis

A civil rights leader, Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” I agree to a great extent that when helping others one can find learning about themselves in the process. Gandhi's quote advocates that in order to discover the essence of who we truly are as people you can't be selfish. Helping others is humbling and allows people to see things from a different perspective. Additionally while helping other people, it can lead you to change aspects of yourself for the better. In my experience, I noticed that whenever I volunteer I unawarenly learn so much about my true intentions. One time my friends and I volunteered to do a park clean-up because we all needed service hours for a school assignment. I remember towards the end of the day even though I was covered in dirt and sweat and also completely exhausted, I didn't seem to care. I was so focused on helping get the park clean I didn't mind all the pain and effort that would come from it; I completely lost all care for my own personal intentions and just wanted to make sure the park was clean. It made me think about how much I love helping my community and ended up completely forgetting about the services hours I needed. I learned from that experience more about myself than I ever expected and additionally my true intentions for volunteering. In the end, I didn't care about the service hours I achieve from volunteering, I was just proud that I helped the community out.
On the contrary, when hearing Gandhi's quote, some people find themselves thinking that in order to discover more about yourself it would not involve other people. Learning more about yourself does involve a lot of self-thinking however, its human nature to learn from …show more content…

Giving time to others allows yourself to be open to new ideas and have the ability to learn new things from others. You may not even be aware of the impact helping others can have on you. Additionally, helping others displays your intentions as a person and it takes time to realize how it impacts your self-discovery.
