Fashioning Sacred Identity During the Renaissance period, fashion played a significant role as their appearances determined their wealth,status and nobility. From the use of vibrant colors, to luxurious garments, and fine jewelries, it was their statement of wealth and family background. I chose three paintings from the MET museum that depicts fashion sacred identity as it is shown through a religious point of view. Madonna and Child is a painting drawn by Filippino Lippi. Over the years, Lapis transforms into a dark shade of blue, losing its true color; however, this painting was restored and the Lapis is able to portray the beauty of its natural pigment.

Throughly explaining the significance of their fashion and how it reflects their wealth. The first painting that I chose was Madonna and Child, painted by Filippino Lippi and donated by Jules Bache in 1949. Filippino Lippi is an Italian artist, born in Florence, circa 1457-1504. Lippi was one the finest Florentine painters also known as the son of Fra Filippo Lippi. Filippino was trained by his father then followed by Sandro Botticelli, also known as one of the definitive painters of the Italian Renaissance. This painting, Madonna and Child is to portray Mother Mary and baby Jesus. This sacred painting is shown through religious symbolism such as her mantle and the significance meaning behind the colors of her garment, in addition to subtle symbolisms such as the pomegranate and the halo. The first thing that catches the viewers attentions are the vibrant blue garment that Virgin Mary is wearing, also known as the mantle. The main purpose of a mantle is to be used as a clock or other article of clothing. It’s practical purposes are to keep people warm

    Madonna and Child is a panel painting by Italian medieval artist Duccio di Buoninsegna. Painted in tempera and gilded on a wood panel in around the year 1300, the Madonna and Child is still in its original engaged frame. The fact that it was in private hands and out of public circulation for years might be why the painting is basically intact after 700 years. The craftsmanship and preservation are simply amazing. The damaged lower edge of the frame is charred where devotional candles may have tipped over. The Madonna and Child is presently part of a special exhibition "The Philippe de Montebello Years: Curators Celebrate Three Decades of Acquisitions" in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The painting is very small and measures only 11 by 8 1/8 in., which in comparison is about the size of a legal sized piece of paper. Considered to be a rare and uniquely important early Renaissance masterpiece, The Met purchased this painting in November 2004 for something in excess of $45 million.     Often, the paintings of Mary and Jesus used mainly red and blue and are used interchangeably with one another. Red symbolized the blood and the martyred heroes, whereas the blue stood for heaven, serenity and calmness. Mary was crowned as the queen of heaven when she died and Jesus brought her up to heaven to stand with him in the kingdom of God. Likewise, Romulus and Remus would’ve done the same and bring their mother to live with them in their kingdom/city. In person, it is more stunning to witness not only due to the size, but also because of the vividness the painting still holds after all these years. It seemed as though it was done almost yesterday due to the freshness the content displayed and in comparison to all the other artworks in the area, this stood out to me due to the colors itself. Mignard’s choice to bring attention to the individuals’ clothing by surrounding it with darker colors in the background created a contrast that was not too harsh to view and the bright colors lures one’s eyes into it. Also, his choice of the lighting created a focus that draws the viewer in so they would not have to look elsewhere to determine what the “thesis” of the artwork is.     Chimabue's approach to composition in the artwork "Enthroned Madonna and Child" was extremely confirmative to the time period. He made use of the medieval heiracy of scale, making Mary and baby Jesus much larger than other figures, therefore making them the focal point of the painting. This was to emphasize their importance. They are also placed centrally on the painting, again to direct the eye towards them and to show their importance as the subject of the painting.     Anne depicts the Virgin Mary reaching forward to grab the Christ-child while the child is also reaching toward the lamb. The Virgin is depicted seated upon the lap of St. Anne. Due to the implied movement in the image, the triangular structure is loose and only held together due to the unnatural size of St. Anne, which is needed in order to accommodate a full-grown woman.
