Father Son Rel In Phic

Narrators have always used their work to highlight issues or broaden their reader or audiences minds in understanding a particular theme. We may watch a film, go to the theatre or read a book to be theatre or read a book to be entertained or uplifted but very often narratives have the power to make us take a different perspective on life. The three texts, I have studied are Philadelphia here I come (PHIC) by Brian Friel, “Cinema Paradiso (CP) directed by and My Oedipus Complex and other stories by Frank O Conner. Each text looks at the theme of father-son relationship while some views off this relationship overlap and some are very different nevertheless they certainly opened up for me the importance of this relationship and the emptiness of life when this relationship fails.
In PHIC, it is evident that a strained and problematic relationship exists between our main character Gar and his father SB. The play is set the night before Gar’s departure for America, leaving his life in Ballybeg behind him. Gar is both distressed and frustrated at the crisis point in his life, the loving but inexpressive relationship Gar had with his father fascinated me as I watched the play. Through Gar’s narration it was made clear that neither man was prepared to diverse in meaningful conversation with the other. “Screwballs say something, say something father”. Unlike PHIC an affectionate and expressive relationship emerges in CP. The close and loving relationship between Alfredo and Toto is essentially a father-son relationship which contracts greatly with gar and SB’s situation. Since Toto’s father has failed to return from the war. Alfredo becomes a type of surrogate father for Toto which is strengthened by their shared passion of cinema. As in PHIC, a strained father-son relationship occurs between Larry Delaney and his absent father Mick, who has just returned from war in MOC In the title story “My Oedipus Complex”, “The Study of History” and “The Dukes Children”...
