Social networking sites are a huge distraction among many teens and adults trying to focus on other things. It can be so addictive, some claim it is like a drug. Although some people may be able to limit the distraction, research has found that those who use these networks while studying scored 20% less than they would have if focused only on studying. I know first hand that this is true. I can't count how many times I have had to completely log out of Twitter and Facebook while studying because I couldn't stop checking to see what my friends were up to or to see the latest gossip. Social networks are extremely addicting because everybody wants to be in the "know." Nobody likes to feel left out, and if the information is accessible, many people figure that they should constantly utilize it.…

First of all, people who over rely on social media waste almost all of their time on their computers or smartphones. It is easy to go online and check our social media, especially on smartphones, which gives us a very easy function that takes less than 1 minute to go online and they improve it to be easier and more convenient all the time. Because of its ease and convenience, people go online and check their social media very often. Even though it takes less time to go online, it takes more time to explore in the online world. When you start, it is hard to stop because you cannot control your curiousity. In the article, “Confessions of an Instant Messenger,” Conor Boyland claims that instant messaging is like a snowball, it will become bigger and bigger, and when you notice, you are not able to stop. This seems to be undamaging, but it makes you have no time to study, work or do other things. For example, I am addicted to social media. I always check my social media on my iPhone before doing my homework, going to shower and going to sleep and it always makes me go to bed late because I spend more than 2 hours on it. It seems like it is not hard to stop this habit, but when it really happens, you are unconscious of it.…

Facebook is now-a-days most used social networking media and to some people it is the most widely used communication tool. In Bangladesh it has such significance. Especially among the university students its popularity is sky high. Most of the students use is as a medium to stay connected with their friends and family. Bangladesh as a Muslim and economically developing nation offers only a few recreational facilities to its young generation. And for the female members it is even below that. I expected through my research I would find out that female students of the private universities of Dhaka city are more into Facebook than their male counterparts. But after conducting surveys and online research, to my surprise I found that, gender has nothing to do with Facebook addiction.…

These are the word of daisy jones, a 31 year old undergraduate from Loughborough University, UK. Daisy deactivated her facebook account when she became concerned about the impact her frequent visits to the social networking site was having on her studies (Leake & Warren, 2009). A 2009 study by Karpinki and Duberstein seems to confirm Daisy’s fears : according to the researchers, American college students who use the 750 million-member social network have significantly lower grade-point averages (GPAs) than those who do not (cited in Hamilton, 2009). After conducting a survey of 219 undergraduate and graduate students, the researchers found that the GPAs of facebook users typically ranged a full grade poin lower than those of non-users – 3.0 to 3.5 for users versus 3.5 to 4.0 for their non-networking peers (cited in Hamilton, 2009). Yet despite this evidence to suggest that facebook users are at risk of performing less well in their studies, there are those who dispute the conclusions drawn from these findings and argue that more research into all aspect of the social networking phenomenon are needed before such pronouncement can be made.…
